Kava, kophee, kaphī, kôfē, kape... transforms the familiar ritual of engaging in coffee conversations into a framework for dialogue on the cultural integration of foreign workers and its challenges within Croatia. Featuring a coffee table where screens replace traditional interlocutors, participants are invited to sit and select one of the coffee cups labeled with different topics. Upon selecting a cup, conversations unfold on the screens, where actors engage in dialogues related to the chosen topic. The actors’ faces are intentionally obscured to shift focus to their body language and the content of their speech rather than their identities. During the video, placing them in the position of silent observers. The work invites the audience to continue the experiment by reflecting inwardly, writing down thoughts or initiating conversations.

This project originated from research exploring these dynamics through experimental conversations facilitated over coffee. Serving as a bridge in communication, I connected with each participant individually, encouraging them to discuss, engage and challenge other participants opinions. Coffee was chosen due to its importance in culture of Croatia and its significance as a pretext for conversation. The aim was to uncover the experiences and perspectives of individuals living in Croatia. The interactive multi-screen installation presents this research within the context of the participants who were involved, using the coffee-drinking ritual as a platform to address various questions and foster dialogue on these important issues. The name of the project is the pronunciation of the word “coffee” in five different languages, reflecting the native languages of the participants I had conversations within Zagreb.
